Join us as we delve into Rome's streets, neighbourhoods, and iconic sites that have left an enduring impact on the world. In this article, I'll outline all the essential information you should have before embarking on your upcoming grand journey. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an art lover, or a food explorer, Rome offers a memorable experience that's sure to resonate with you. In this blog, I will list everything you need to know before your next big adventure.
Important things to know
1) Public transit is great however they love to scam tourists
As I said, the public transit system is great in Rome but the Polizia di Stato (Public Transit Police) LOVE to scam tourists. It is really important that you have your ticket BEFORE you get on the bus and then you need to VERIFY your ticket once you’re on the bus. Purchasing tickets on the bus involves card tapping, followed by a verification step. However, I'm still a bit puzzled about the verification process since there's no physical ticket provided onboard the bus, haha. They will find any excuse to charge you so make sure to be extra certain you’re doing everything right. I recommend pre-buying a bus pass online if you know you will be taking transit a lot during your time in Rome.
2) Beware of Pick-Pockets
We were super careful on our trip and were very fortunate not to have any incidents with theft. However, you need to be extremely careful. Never leave your phone or wallet out on a table, and keep an eye on your and your travel companion's bags when you can.
3) A cab from the airport is very expensive, so take the train instead.
The drive from the airport to the city centre is pretty far, and the cabs overcharge you like crazy. We stayed at an airport hotel our last night in Italy before we flew home and our cab price was so expensive, I can only imagine how much it would be to drive all the way to the city. There is a direct train from the airport to the city centre with Trenitalia, it’s very easy to navigate, much more affordable and takes you directly to Rome. Just follow the train signs when you arrive in Rome and you will figure it all out.
4) The Airport is far from the city centre, so book flights/trains accordingly
The airport is about an hour's train ride from the city centre, and the train is only open from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm. This makes things rather challenging if you plan on taking an early morning flight, and want to take the train to the airport. So plan your trip accordingly, either book a later flight or plan to pay for a cab.
5) Rome is super busy, pre-book EVERYTHING
Tickets for attractions such as the Colosseum, and the Vatican go on sale a month before the date and sell out IMMEDIATELY. This isn’t just for peak tourist season either, this is all year round. Rome is insanely busy and tickets sell fast. I recommend booking right away if you want to get in, and if you can’t get entry tickets just pay extra for the tours. The tours aren’t great if I’m being honest but at least you can get in to see the sights.
On the Vatican tours you have to listen to your guide through a earphone
because there is SOOO many people in there lol
6) Go to the Trevi Fountain early
The Trevi Fountain is located in a very small square, so you can imagine when it fills up with tourists that it is very difficult to get up close and take pictures. We went at 7 am and there were only about 1-2 dozen people there. That seems like a lot but trust me you don’t want to see it when there are HUNDREDS of people packed into that small space. I recommend getting up early and checking out this attraction to escape the crowds.
If you want the good pics - GET OUT OF BED lol
Accommodation
During our three-week European adventure, Rome ended up being the most expensive city we stayed in. So, be ready to allocate a higher budget for your time in this destination. At this point of the trip, there were only 2 of us and we spent roughly $75 a night. Our hotel was not the best and in an interesting area to say the least so I won’t recommend that haha. However, most bloggers recommend staying in the Centro Storico neighbourhood. This is right near the Colosseum and is a pretty safe part of the city. As I said, just prepare to spend a little more, likely more than we spent because we cheaped out a bit in all honesty.

Within the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's renowned frescoes grace the ceiling, offering a glimpse of divine inspiration. Finally, St. Peter's Basilica, a majestic masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, stands as a testament to faith and human achievement, its grandeur both humbling and awe-inspiring.
The art in the Sistine Chapel is beautiful, but the amount of people they CRAM in there is not lol...
